I have wanted to go to Alaska for a very long time... Actually ever since my 5th grade US state report that I did on Alaska. As close as I ever got was a lot of glossy travel brochures, the World Book Encyclopedia and the styrofoam map that I made in the shape of Alaska and covered with Ivory Snow...
About a year ago Tom and I started planning our trip to Alaska and what we have come up with is a 7 week 10,000 mile road trip through northern MI, WI, MN, ND, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon Territory and finally Alaska. We'll be pulling a travel travel, neither of us are experienced at pulling big toys behind a vehicle much less backing such toys into parking places. This should be very interesting! But we should be very experienced by the time we get back to Michigan. Once there we plan to hike, fish, backpack the Chilkoot Trail http://www.nps.gov/klgo/planyourvisit/chilkoottrail.htm, kayak in the Kenai, experience the local cuisine and customs, take lots of photos and just enjoy the awesome outdoors. What I hope to miss are any up close and personal experiences with bears and the swarms of mosquitos that come with summer in Alaska.
I hope you'll follow my blog and experience my trip with me...

I recently read that there is a, "bear bell" that some hikers wear as they walk so that bears will hear and move away. This way they will not be surprized if approached suddenly . I don't know if this will help. I guess you could just sing and whistle and or talk while you walk and it may have the same affect. Check with those who know for sure, I don't want to suggest something that may in fact attract bears. A fifth grade US state report? Was that for Miss Diehl or Mrs. Hannold? God bless you and I hope we can all go on this trip with you, at least virtually.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I also heard that deoderant might attract critters.
ReplyDeleteGib - We'll be carrying bear spray. Miss Diehl for 5th grade - you mean you don't remember my Alaska map all covered in Ivory Snow?? :-)
