We left Ann Arbor at 7:30 after playing around with the water storage system and headed north. Still not feeling great with the cold that I brought home from California, Tom did all of the driving today. We stopped for a quick lunch at a rest area about a half hour from the Mackinaw Bridge. We did run into a little bit of rain this morning but once we hit the UP the weather was beautiful. We drove along Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, how absolutely beautiful! We are camping for the night on Sunday Lake in Wakefield, MI just east of Ironwood. This is a beautiful campground on a gorgeous lake. Tomorrow we hope to make it to somewhere west of Winnipeg, Manitoba. We are changing our itinerary somewhat due to the flooding in the Minot, ND area… Cheers!!
Day 2 (7/12/11)
We hit the road around 7:30 this morning. After the beautiful drive through the UP, we decided to take scenic byways and back roads as much as possible even though it means a bit longer days. Today we took Route 2 through Wisconsin into Minnesota and picked up Route 59 in Erskine, MN and made it as far as Ile del Chene, Manitoba.
Highlights of the day... We ate lunch at a roadside park along a beautiful stream in Minnesota. I always thought Bemidji (MN) was a cool sounding town and we managed to wander through it and see the Paul Bunyan and Babe statues in the center of town just after crossing the Mississippi River. The river here is a mere stream, only a stone throw across. I've got to say that this was absolutely the easiest border crossing into Canada that I have even done. I guess it helps crossing the border on a two track road. We didn't see another car heading south for at least 20 miles before the border. The road instantly changed once we hit Manitoba, and definitely not for the better! The 2 lane road suddenly became a 1 1/2 lane bouncy road especially hauling a trailer. The people in this area, both the US and Canada are about the most genuinely friendly people I have ever met!!! :-) I tried to buy lefsa when we hit Carlstad, MN but they didn't have any... it was a very Scandinavian town, so I thought I might have a chance.
We're staying at a small campground tonight that is very quiet but very friendly. I drove for a while today and did pretty well. We were trying to find the Wallmart in Bemidji, MN to stock up on groceries before hitting the border and I had to pull 3 U turns and park in the Wallmart parking lot. Needless to say, Tom's truck is still in one piece with no scratches or dents as is the trailer.
Tomorrow we are going to head west on Canada 16, otherwise known as the Yellowhead Highway. It's really not a highway at all but another 2 lane road extending from just west of Winnipeg to Prince Rupert. We'll be taking it as far as Edmonton (813 Miles) then heading northwest to Dawson Creek, BC where we'll pick up the Alaska Highway.
Well all has been going well until just a couple of minutes ago when we saw a stream of water running out from under the toilet :-( on to trouble shooting.
